From the back of the slipcover:

In June 1966, George Harrison met maestro Ravi Shankar in Bath, England. Harrison asked Ravi to teach him how to play the sitar, a task Ravi agreed to only after considerable hesitation. Their collaboration resulted in an explosion in the popularity of claisscal Indian music and instrumentation in the United States and around the world.

Harrison called Ravi "The Godfather of World Music." Trained in both traditional Hindustani music and classical European theater, Ravi was an artistic genius who influenced countless artists around the world. He infused structure and spectacle into Indian instrumental music and introduce the West to Indian traditional like meditation. He was a true ambassador of India's rich culture of mindfulness that extended well beyond the stage.

The Blackwing 3 is a tribute to Ravi Shankar on his 100th birthday. It features a matte turmeric finish accented with a pattern inspired by one of Ravi's iconic sitars. The pattern prominently features the Om, a sacred Sanskrit symbol with phonetic components that correlate to the waking, dream, and unconscious states of being. The Om was an important symbol to Ravi, and served as a constant reminder of the contemplative, spiritual nature of his music. Translated from Hindi, Ravi means "sun," and this pencil's gold imprint and ferrule are a meditation on the light he brought into the world through is music and spirit.

Released in March 2021, the Blackwing Volumes 223 limited edition Blackwing pencil is a tribute to the iconic artist Woody Guthrie and the immutable optimism his songs have inspired.

From the back of the slipcover:

"All you can write is what you see." On February 23, 1940, Woody Guthrie scribbled these words and bottom of a lyric. Above them was a song he had just written about the inequality he witnessed in his travels across the United States. This is Your Land would go on to become one of the most poignant and iconic folk songs in history.

Woody is often depicted in sepia tones reminiscent of the Dust Bowl, but his artistic palette extended much further. He filled composition notebooks and day planners with sketches, poems, and paintings on his countless journeys. His art was playful and vibrant, despite its often gritty content. He described his fusion of old compositions and new ideas as a mashup of "what is" and "what could be." Woody believed we could be better, and used his creations to inspire people to believe the same.

The Blackwing 223 is a tribute to Woody Guthrie and his immutable optimism. Each pencil features a design inspired by This Land's "ribbon of highway," "endless skyway" and "golden valley." The matte black ferrule and earth-toned eraser on a nod to the many miles Woody traveled. We used our balanced graphite formulation that works well for both writing and sketching so you, too, can fill your pages with what you see.
