Released in June 2018, the thirteenth “Volumes” series limited edition Blackwing pencils, the Blackwing Volumes 10001, pays tribute to Tetsuya Miyamoto, the puzzles of his creation, and other creative ways of teaching a learning. The pencil's namesake is a numeral palindrome in Kanji and Arabic numerals, and tied to one of Miyamoto Sensei's favorite equations.
The pencil features a red stained barrel, firm graphite (same as the Blackwing 602,) gold imprint, and unique five-sided "Gokaku pencil" shape. Translated literally from Japanese, Gokaku means "passed," as in a problem or exam. It is also a near homophone for the Japanese word "Gokakukei," meaning pentagon. Gokaku pencils are given to every student who graduates from the Miyamoto Mathematics class.
From the included insert:
Innovative math educator Tetsuya Miyamoto created KenKen in 2004 so students could experience the joy of learning in his well-renowned Miyamoto Mathematics Classroom.
Miyamoto Sensei believes in "The Art of Teaching Without Teaching: -- also the title of his popular book. He explains, "If you give children good educational materials, they will think, learn, and grow on their own. Children work in the same way as babies who naturally lean to stand up and start walking without actually being taught." To learn more about his pizzles and methods, visit miyamoto-mathematics.com.
